After being cooped up all winter, we’re looking ahead to warmer days spent by the lake. Just minutes from the visionary, master-planned townhome community of Oakvillage lies the beauty and freedom of a waterfront lifestyle. The Halton region, situated along the shores of Lake Ontario, features 25 km of scenic lakefront for you to enjoy – your way.
Are you a boat enthusiast? Put your vessel in the lake and leave solid earth far behind for the afternoon. Can’t sail? Learn how at the Oakville Yacht Squadron Sailing School, which also has lessons for tiny, wanna-be sailors.
If you are more of a landlubber, take a jog or stroll along the town’s waterfront trail. With its tree-lined streets, museums, two harbours and eye-catching gardens, the trail is the perfect place to get some exercise.
If you have kids, the waterfront is a terrific place to spend an afternoon. Skip stones into the water, race along the pier at Oakville Harbour, enjoy the playgrounds and have a picnic lunch in one of the many green spaces.
If you’re sans picnic basket, dine with a view at one of the amazing lakeside restaurants. Dig into a gourmet pizza at Yolanda’s Spuntino Casa or enjoy grilled calamari at Zara’s by the Lake. You can also host your next special event by the lake at Compass Restaurant in a historic lighthouse setting.
Of course, spending time by the lake is not just a warm-weather activity. Just think how striking the trail becomes when the leaves change in autumn, and how majestic the lake looks in wintertime. Every January 1,the brave souls of Oakville sign up for the Courage Polar Bear Dip and plunge into icy Lake Ontario to raise money for World Vision.
Even if you feel like doing absolutely nothing, a day by the lake is good for what ails you. Simply settle yourself into a pier-side bench, gaze out at the water and revive your mind, body and soul.
